Manchester United could be given the chance to beat Liverpool in yet another transfer battle this summer.

United have already completed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves to kickstart their summer transfer business. A deal worth £62.5million was agreed earlier in the summer, and now rumours are swirling about the business that United may have lined up next.

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo has reported that United have joined the race to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio. The report claims that United will compete with both Liverpool and Newcastle for the signing of Inacio this summer.

Inacio recently starred for Portugal as he helped guide his country to victory in the final of the Nations League.

Now the centre-back, who is reported to have a €60million (£51million) release clause in his contract at Sporting, could be a target for United this summer.

It was only 12 months ago that United and Liverpool were also in the race to sign a centre-back.

United won that battle when they completed the signing of Leny Yoro from Lille, a saga that also saw Real Madrid express an interest in the defender.

Inacio is under contract at Sporting until 2027 and has been linked with a move away from the Primeira Liga outfit for the last couple of years.

Inacio is not the only member of the Sporting squad to be mentioned as a target for United this summer, either.

Viktor Gyokeres is also reportedly a player of interest to United as the second phase of the summer transfer window approaches. United will be able to resume their transfer business when the window reopens on Monday.
