The European Union (EU) has pumped €200,000 (approximately K390 million) in humanitarian aid towards Mozambican asylum seekers in Malawi.
This is contained in a statement released by the union
The EU says the support seeks to bolster efforts of the Malawi Red Cross Society in providing relief items to the affected people.
It adds that the efforts will address the impact on host communities, including pressure on water resources, deforestation and sanitation issues.
“The funding is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the disaster response emergency fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies,” the statement reads.
It says the funds are under a six-month project set to be implemented until the end of August 2025.
“It is expected to benefit all the registered asylum seekers,” it says.
The EU, through its European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid operations, helps millions of victims of conflict and disasters every year.
The European Commission signed a €14 million humanitarian contribution agreement with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the federation’s disaster response emergency fund (DREF).
Funds under the fund are allocated to small-scale disasters that do not give rise to a formal international appeal.
There are over 7,000 registered Mozambican asylum seekers in Dedza and Nsanje districts.
The people fled Mozambique due to unrest following highly contested general elections held on October 9 2024.
