Brockton High students celebrate free college offers from Livingstone College
Brockton High School students got a surprise Tuesday: a chance to go to college for free thanks to an opportunity from Livingstone College, a historically Black college in Salisbury, North Carolina.
“It’s amazing. It just makes it feel like I could really take advantage of this opportunity,” said Biane Viana, a Brockton senior.
“It’s massive. It’s really nice to know that, especially for my family where I’m the first one going to college,” said Nicholas Gaynor, another Brockton senior.
For students to get a full ride, they need a 3.75 GPA. However, even if students don’t have those grades, there are scholarship options available.
“It’s just opening up the world here where it’s not just something where it’s a knock against local colleges, but the world is much bigger than Southeastern Massachusetts, and if they have the opportunity to venture out on their own, to see something different, I just think it’s a great thing,” said Brockton High School Principal Kevin McCaskill.
Last year, Livingstone College offered 25 Brockton students full rides. More than 30 are being offered that opportunity this year. While no decisions are being made Tuesday, the students know they will have an opportunity to go to college for free.
“You are given blessings to be a blessing to someone else. So you’re blessed to be a blessing. So shame on me if I get to the highest echelon of my career and not send the elevator back down to bring somebody else up,” said Livingstone College President Anthony Davis.
“My mom, she’s in Cape Verde, but I’m going to call her,” Viana said when asked who she would contact first about the news. “She’s going to be surprised, and she’s going to be so happy for me.”
