Student company in Oman develops natural pesticide for animal infections

The Protex Student Company from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Al Musannah has succeeded in producing a natural product to eliminate fleas and insects that commonly infect animals.

MUSCAT : The University fosters an environment that encourages student creativity and entrepreneurship, and Protex exemplifies this spirit.

Recognizing the limitations of existing chemical-laden products, the student company shifted their focus shifted towards developing a safer and more sustainable solution.

Saeed bin Hamad Al Shafei, Executive Director of Protex Student Company, highlighted the team’s observation of the prevalent issue of insects and fleas affecting animals. Recognizing that many products on the market contain harmful chemicals, the team embarked on creating a safe and sustainable alternative that outperforms existing chemical solutions.

Shafei emphasized that the product underwent rigorous laboratory testing at internationally accredited laboratories to ensure its effectiveness in eliminating insects found in animals. Compared to other products on the market, this natural pesticide boasts superior quality and efficacy, requiring significantly less time for elimination.

Omar bin Juma Al-Jahdhami, a quality control technician at Protex, revealed that the product is currently in the manufacturing phase at the University. The team is in the process of obtaining a certificate of conformity to specifications and standards from the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion.

Abdul Aziz bin Mahmoud Al Abri, a member of Protex, pointed out that the company has already secured over 56 sales and purchase agreements for three different products targeting various categories. Each product offers a unique method of application, catering to diverse needs.

Established in October 3, 2023, with the membership of eight students from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Mussanah, Protex underwent extensive research, studies, and experiments under the supervision of the Research Center for Animal Production in the Wilayat of Barka, South Al Batinah Governorate.

The achievement of Protex Student Company has garnered recognition, winning first place at the South Al Batinah Governorate level in the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry Award. Furthermore, the company has qualified for the second stage in the ongoing Injaz Oman competition.
